Smallville: Season 8 Casting Updates

On the heels of the news that Kristin Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum will not be returning as regulars on Smallville next season, TV Guide's Michael Ausiello has a bit more information on what might be in store for Season 8. First off is confirmation that Allison Mack ("Chloe") is returning for "a minimum of 18 episodes."

As for Kreuk and Rosenbaum, details are still being worked out regarding how much they might appear, as both are not against doing story arcs or guest appearances on the series. Smallville's executive producer Al Gough tells TV Guide that Kreuk will in fact "be back for a portion of the season – likely the first third." As for Rosenbaum, Gough says "Quite frankly, those negotiations are just getting started. So there's no word one way or the other whether he'll be back next year or not."

Ausiello says that in the best-case scenario, Rosenbaum would be back for 18 episodes – nearly the entire season – while the "second-best" scenario has him doing 11 episodes. However, with negotiations still in flux, it seems possible he might not return at all.

Ausiello also hints that with Lana off the show and a new love interest needed, Superman comic book character Lori Lemaris – a mermaid in her comics incarnation – might be headed to Smallville.

No Lex or Lana in Smallville Season 8!

Fans of the Superman mythos are undoubtedly thrilled by the recent announcement by the CW that Smallville has been renewed for an eighth season. However, according to Mike Ausiello at TV Guide, the drama about Clark Kent before he becomes Superman will be returning without Michael Rosenbaum or Kristen Kreuk.

Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor on the show, and Kreuk, who plays the love of Clark Kent's young life, Lana, are both interested in pursuing their film careers, and as such have decided that they don't wish to be regulars during the show's eighth (and possibly final) season. However, both are open to doing limited engagements on the show, and details are currently being worked out to arrange that.

Ausiello also revealed the news that when the show airs it's first post-strike episode on April 17, a "long running character - a series regular - takes his final breath." Just in case there was any ambiguity, he clarifies "As in dies. For real. No cloning crap this time around."

While Ausiello doesn't provide specifics, our best guess is that he is referring to Lionel Luthor, played by John Glover. He's the only long-running male character on the show who isn't required to survive into Clark's adulthood.

Smallville airs Thursday nights on the CW. The drama about the early days of Clark Kent stars Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristen Kreuk, John Glover, Erica Durance, Allison Mack, Aaron Ashmore and Laura Vandervoot.

Smallville: Is Chloe in or out for Season 8?

The situation with Mack was clearly a dicey one – Yesterday, The CW put out their press release for the next TV season, and Mack's name was notably absent from the Smallville listing. But with Kristin Kreuk ("Lana Lang") taking on a considerably reduced role and Michael Rosenbaum ("Lex Luthor") leaving the show completely, Mack because an important component for Smallville to maintain any connection to its original days, which Ausiello says Mack's representatives were using to leverage a better deal for the actress.
