( key / key ) ![]() BOLTON WANDERERS 0 - 2 LIVERPOOLSaturday 15 November 2008 12:45 , Barclays Premier League REDS TOP AFTER 2-0 WIN AT REEBOK Liverpool reclaimed top spot after goals from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard secured a 2-0 victory over Bolton at the Reebok. Strikes either side of the break saw the Reds leapfrog Chelsea, who face West Brom in the Saturday tea-time fixture. A quartet of missed chances from Gerrard, Robbie Keane and substitutes Fernando Torres and Lucas Leiva prevented a more convincing scoreline but Liverpool did more than enough to bounce back from their Carling Cup exit. It was no surprise to see Benitez make nine changes from the side that lost 4-2 at White Hart Lane in midweek, Sami Hyypia and Daniel Agger the only survivors. Jamie Carragher was selected ahead of youngster Stephen Darby at right-back, while Torres had to settle for a place on the bench. It was another Spaniard who instead pulled the strings for Liverpool in an action-packed first half which brought due reward. Xabi Alonso pinged balls around midfield as if playing to the beat of Bolton's rather annoying North Stand drum. Up front Keane made some excellent runs but a combination of his own profligacy and a lack of ammunition from out wide prevented a follow up to last week's West Brom brace. The Irishman missed an absolute sitter on 30 minutes after failing to make contact with a low drill through the six-yard box from Kuyt. Instead it was the Dutch international who did the business for Liverpool during the opening period. He should have already found the net by the time he opened the scoring on 28 minutes, this after an intricate one-two with the marauding Steven Gerrard. The skipper cut back from the byline but his teammate put too much backlift into his shot and hit the bar. Never mind, he soon made amends. Much is made of Liverpool's strength at full-back, but the superb Fabio Aurelio once again produced the goods at a stadium where he scored his first Reds goal in March. The visitors had strung together some 10 to 15 passes when the ball reached Aurelio down the left. The Brazilian sent a pinpoint cross to the head of Kuyt, whose 10-yard nod was reminiscent of Alan Shearer. The Dutchman must have been reminded of his Feyenoord days, when goal poaching was his main duty, as his effort looped beyond a despairing Jussi Jaaskelainen. Daniel Agger could have made it two with a free header from a Riera cross, while both he and Alonso came close with long shots. It was actually Bolton who found the net next when Gary Cahill headed home from a corner, but referee Rob Styles was quick to spot some pushing and, much to Gary Megson's chagrin, disallow the goal. A spate of unnecessary set-pieces after the restart spelled danger for Liverpool and had Sammy Lee, back on the Reebok touchline for the first time since leaving Bolton, screaming at his charges. Bolton were doing what they failed to do in the first half and closing the visitors down. It was this harrying that allowed half-time substitute Ricardo Gardner to ghost behind the Liverpool defence on 51 minutes before rounding Pepe Reina. An open goal begged to be rippled but the subsequent miss had Gardner holding his head in his hand. Keane, standing 50 yards down field, knew how he felt. The incident saw Agger clatter into the post and lose a tooth Minutes later Keane made way for Torres, who immediately presented Gerrard with a gilt-edged chance with an undefendable cross from the right. The captain, who celebrates 10 years at the club next week, only had to touch the ball into the net but mistimed his slide and instead hit wide. Liverpool, whose midfielders were now smothered by a wall of white shirts, needed a second. It finally came on 73 minutes when Torres teased Andy O'Brien on the 18-yard line. It soon became clear that he was waiting for Gerrard to join him in the box, and, when the cross arrived, his patience paid dividends as the skipper flicked beyond a helpless Jaaskelainen with his forehead. Torres was denied a comeback goal of his own with 10 minutes left on the clock when he broke loose before losing a battle of wits with Bolton's goalkeeper. There were three more incredible misses to describe, first when Gardner lobbed the ball over Reina and the crossbar when a simply conversion would have done, Next Torres whacked a Lucas Leiva cut-back wide of the target from six yards, before the Brazilian missed with the goal at his mercy. Teams Liverpool: Reina, Aurelio, Hyypia, Agger, Arbeloa, Riera, Alonso, Mascherano, Kuyt, Gerrard (captain), Keane. Subs - Darby, Babel, Leiva, Dossena, Cavalieri, Torres, Benayoun Bolton Wanderers: Jaaskelainen, Samuel, O'Brien, Cahill, Steinsson, Taylor, McCann, Muamba, Nolan (captain), Davies, Elmander. Subs - Gardner, Shittu, Obadeyi, Smolarek, Habsi, Basham, Helguson Referee: Rob Styles Conditions: Fine Attendance: Unknown Liverpoolfc.tv Man-of-the-Match: Xabi Alonso ![]() Kuyt-Gerrard Menangkan Liverpool Doni Wahyudi - detiksport Bolton - Liverpool meraih kemenangan kesepuluhnya yang mengantar mereka memuncaki klasemen Premiership. Inilah gol keenam Kuyt sepanjang musim ini buat The Kop.

Torres tidak rela MU kejar rekor juara The Reds
Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:50 Striker Liverpool Fernando Torres gundah. Setelah nama itu berubah menjadi Liga Primer, tiga tahun kemudian, The Reds sama sekali belum pernah juara. [kompas]

STEVIE COUNTS DOWN HIS TOP 5 GOALS
Paul Eaton 17 November 2008 Kicking off a week-long series of articles in which Steven Gerrard counts down his 'Favourite Fives', we ask the skipper to select his top five goals from his ten years at Liverpool.Number 5: ![]() gerrardevertongoal My first goal against Everton in 2001. I always love playing against Everton, scoring against them and beating them. I had many dreams as a young kid, one of which was to grow up and score against Everton. I just love the games and I think it's because there's such a strong fear of losing because of the stick we'll get. That really helps get me up for the game. My first goal against them - at Goodison as well - is one I'll never forget and had to be included in this list. Number 4: ![]() gerrardalaves Scoring in the UEFA Cup final against Alaves in Dortmund gave me the confidence that I could perform in the biggest matches. I was only young but I knew after that game that I could go on and score many more goals for Liverpool. Number 3: ![]() gerrardfafinal1 At number 3 is my first goal in the 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham. It came at a good time for us and got us back on level terms after going a couple of goals behind. It meant our dream of winning the competition was still alive. Number 2: ![]() gerrardfafinal2 I'm going to go for my second goal in the FA Cup final against West Ham in 2006. It was really horrible in the final minutes of the game thinking that I would soon be watching the West Ham players dancing around Cardiff with winners medals. That's why my goal was so important - it gave us extra time and the chance to go on and win it for ourselves. We had worked so hard on the day on a massive pitch in Cardiff and I had nothing left in the final stages - it was more a hit and hope than anything, and fortunately it went in. As a kid you always dream of playing in an FA Cup final. It doesn't matter who is involved, you always watch it on the television and so to get the chance to lead the side out in a final, to score and then win the Cup is an unbelievable experience. Number 1: ![]() gerrardistanbul At number one has to be my header in the Champions League final. It may have only been a close range header, but in terms of getting us back into the match it was a massive goal. I think that goal gave us the belief to go on and save the game. At half-time it looked like we could lose 5-0 or 6-0 because we had been totally dominated, but my goal gave the players and the fans belief that we could still come back. That's why it was so important and the rest, as they say, is history. ![]() Gerrard my top 5 14/11/08

Quote:
TONY BARRETT ON STEVEN GERRARD
Tony Barrett 17 November 2008 Having played in the Edge Hill Junior League and attended Cardinal Heenan High School, I have the same footballing background as Steven Gerrard.gerrard week ![]() Unfortunately, that is where the similarities begin and where they end. For while Gerrard went on to captain Liverpool and England and put together a Roy of the Rovers style back catalogue of heroic deeds on the pitch, my own football career went no further than the first division of the Liverpool Sunday League. Not that I'm jealous though, not one little bit. Honest. How could you envy the only player ever to score in the finals of the League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and Champions League? A player who has won 70 caps for his country, who has been named PFA Young Player of the Year, UEFA Club Footballer of the Year, PFA Players' Player of the Year and who has notched up a century of goals for the club he supported as a boy. It's not as if he's achieved that much, is it? In all seriousness, if Carlsberg made football careers they would make them like Steven Gerrard's. From enjoying kickabouts on the streets of Huyton's Bluebell estate to lifting the European Cup above his head after the greatest final of all time, Gerrard's boys own story has had to be seen to be believed. Fortunately, it is Liverpool's own supporters who have seen it at first hand, although there have been times when Gerrard could have volunteered for duty elsewhere. Twice Roman Abramovich tried to convince him to leave Anfield behind and twice Gerrard was tempted. Dark nights of the soul don't come much darker than these ones and had it not been for his love for Liverpool FC nagging away at him and the words of wisdom from those who know him best the chances are that he would now be plying his trade at Stamford Bridge. ![]() Tony Barrett on Stevie G Think Olympiacos. Think Istanbul. Think West Ham in Cardiff. Think the last gasp winner against Middlesbrough this season. Then think some more and you'll come up with even more examples of his midas touch turning base metal into solid gold. It doesn't really bear thinking about what would have happened had Gerrard not pulled back from the brink on both occasions but suffice to say Liverpool would have suffered no matter the gargantuan size of the transfer fee they would have inevitably attracted for one of the world's greats. How could you possibly replace a midfielder who can score 20 goals a season and create as many for others, who has an engine to get around the pitch which few others can match but who also knows how to hurt opponents with incisive and decisive bursts of energy and who can tackle with merciless power and pass with peerless precision? No wonder one of the world's richest men had him at the very top of his wanted list for so long and no wonder he is held in such high esteem by team mates past and present at Anfield. Technique and ability are rendered almost meaningless without desire though and fortunately for Liverpool, Gerrard also possesses a will to win which few others can match. This explains why he has been able to drag his team kicking and screaming to glory on so many occasions and why he has been able to turn numerous seemingly hopeless situations around. Think Olympiacos. Think Istanbul. Think West Ham in Cardiff. Think the last gasp winner against Middlesbrough this season. Then think some more and you'll come up with even more examples of his midas touch turning base metal into solid gold. Such desire does not come naturally though, it is honed and harnessed in places like the Bluebell estate where no quarter is ever asked and none is ever given. Street football is as competitive as FA Cup finals in such areas and every single victory has to be earned. Jumpers for goalposts may conjure up a cosy image of sporting enjoyment but the reality in working class areas is you have to be tough and you have to be prepared to fight and scrap for every ball and every goal if your quality is to shine through. That is why Huyton has an enviable record of producing quality footballers from Peter Reid to Tony Hibbert, from Tony Kelly to Craig Hignett and from Joey Barton to David Nugent. And Steven Gerrard is far and away the best of them. Not that Gerrard always plays well of course. Like every other player he has games that pass him by and there are occasions when he fails to reach the incredible standards he has set himself. But even when this does happen he still has a knack of having a major say in the outcome of the game as his nerveless late penalties in Champions League ties at home to Arsenal and Atletico Madrid illustrate. Over the last season or so I have had an ongoing debate with one of Gerrard's Liverpool team mates about where he sits in the pantheon of Anfield greats. His colleague argues that Gerrard now deserves to be ranked as the club's all time number one having taken into account his decade worth of world class service to the Reds. For me, he is not quite yet there yet. In my eyes, Kenny Dalglish will take some shifting from the top spot but it is easy to see why a case could be mounted for Gerrard given what he has brought to the club. Maybe with time – and hopefully with the addition of one or two richly deserved title winners medals – Gerrard will oust the man he rates as his own hero but for now he will just have to settle for being one of the very best players ever to pull on his boots for the most successful club in the history of English football. That's not a bad accolade for a player who started out on Botanic Park in the Edge Hill Junior League and given the way his career has gone so far there are probably many more boys own stories still to be written. Tony Barrett is the Liverpool correspondent for the Liverpool Echo. STEVIE'S SCHOOL DAYS Joe Curran 17 November 2008 In a revealing insight into how Steven Gerrard went from a being a waif-like youth player to the influential captain of today, we hear from his former teachers and coaches about how he showed potential from an early age.gerrard week ![]() Take a look at the photographs below. On first glance they probably appear much like any other team line-up shots. Young lads still developing into grown men; potential yet to be realised. But take a closer look (click on the images for a bigger version) and you'll see a star in the making - our very own Steven Gerrard, before the trophies, the captain's armband and the England caps. Most people's earliest memories of Gerrard begin on November 14 1998, when he came on as a late substitute against Blackburn Rovers to make his Reds debut. He won over the Anfield crowd with a meaty tackle near the Kop end towards the end of the 2-0 victory that day, but we've delved even further back to a time when our future captain was worrying more about the wrath of his teachers than that of Rafael Benitez. /Young Stevie Gerrard ![]() "The thing I remember most about him was his ability as a leader on the field," said Gerrard's former teacher at Huyton and Roby Primary, Gillian Morgan, who also coached the future Liverpool captain in the school football team. "I think he started playing for the school team when he was nine years old and even then Steven was always trying to help others. "His dad always said he was born with a football at his feet and I still think that is true. "Off the field he was very quiet and well behaved. I have met him a few times and appeared on his DVD, Steven Gerrard: My Story'. "It was really nice when he came back to the school as part of that DVD - he even asked me about members of my family and I was surprised he remembered them from all those years ago." Young Stevie Gerrard ![]() When he was 11 years old Gerrard moved to Cardinal Heenan High School, where he began his ascent through into the Liverpool schoolboys ranks. As his year head and coach of the school team, Steve Monoghan saw Stevie go from a slight school player to a star of the Liverpool schoolboys side and reveals how his refusal to admit when a game is lost began at a very early age. "Anyone could see Steve was a talented player, but he was never one to flaunt his talent. He knew he had ability, but he never showed off," said Monoghan. "Many youngsters with his talent would stop trying at lessons, but Stevie didn't and finished school with five GCSEs at grades A-C. "But he was head and shoulders above the rest of the players in his school team. "I remember one game where we were losing 3-0 to Blue Coat in the Merseyside Under-13 Cup final. We ended up coming back to win 4-3 with Stevie scoring two of the goals. "I thought back to that match at half-time when we were losing by the same scoreline in the 2005 Champions League final. He inspired a similar fightback that day too and has done it a few times since then." Young Stevie Gerrard ![]() Echo sports writer Tim Johnson coached Gerrard while he was playing for the Liverpool Schools team and said: "I first became aware of Steven Gerrard in 1992 when the head of PE Eric Chadwick at his then school Cardinal Heenan High told me of a gifted 12-year-old footballer they had. "I was to be the manager of the Liverpool Schools Under-14 team (pictured above) when Steven reached that age and I remembered the name and looked forward to having him as a member of the squad. "But his talent could not be held back and the school nominated him for the city team 12 months earlier than expected. "The most impressive feature of Steven's play at the time was his speed of thought. "He could evaluate a situation and take advantage quicker than any schools footballer I had seen. "The young Gerrard was also a very good tackler. Even when playing against bigger boys he had the courage to put his foot in and he obviously retains that today." After that Gerrard continued his development and quickly joined up with the Under-15s schoolboy side. Johnson also went on to coach that team, but admits that Gerrard went through a frustrating season that year. "At first things went well for him and I can remember him scoring the winning goal against West Lancs in one of the earlier rounds of the English Trophy," added Johnson. "But a series of injuries meant he failed to win an England Schoolboy Cap, which the only level he has not received internal recognition." And despite being pursued by a host of Premier League clubs at the time, Steven signed for Liverpool shortly after the schoolboys team were knocked out of the Cup at the quarter-final stage. "I have met him occasionally since those early days and he always has time to chat," said Johnson. "It would have been impossible to forecast back then how far he would go in the game - I am delighted for him." Young Stevie Gerrard ![]()

REDKNAPP: STEVIE IS SIMPLY THE BEST
Jamie Redknapp 19 November 2008 Continuing our Gerrard week celebrations, former Reds skipper Jamie Redknapp offers his view on our current captain - a player he regards as the best midfielder in the world.![]() It feels like only yesterday that I saw this teenage kid from Huyton for the very first time. He came to join first-team training along with Stephen Wright because Gerard Houllier wanted to have a look at the two of them. Funnily enough I think the boss thought Wright was the better of the two when they first arrived. I always remember passing the ball to Stevie early on and he hit this 50 yard pass to the left wing. I thought to myself: "what have we got here then?" Next he goes into a 50-50 with Paul Ince and smashes him up in the air and we're all thinking we've got something special on our hands - he certainly made an impression that's for sure. ![]() At the time there were a few concerns over his fitness but since then he's been relatively injury-free and he's been different class. They don't come along like him too often. When you're asked to give a tribute to someone it's normal to heap praise on them but with him it's easy because it's so true. He's a special lad - and I don't just mean on the field, I mean off it too. Even now if I ask him to sign a shirt for someone he goes out of his way to help and there it is the next day. I honestly can't speak more highly of him. ![]() One game that always stands out from my brief time playing with him was the Merseyside derby against Everton in 1999. We won the match 3-2 and Stevie kicked a couple off the line playing at right-back. His passion for the club was there for all to see that day. I remember how he celebrated one of those clearances as if he'd just smashed one in at the Kop end. I spoke to my Dad after the game and he said: "Who was that at right back? He was like superman that kid." After that day he just got better and better and in the seasons that followed he went on to establish himself as one of the best central midfielders in the world. Now he's improved so much that he is the best. I've been saying that for a while now and no-one comes near him as far as I'm concerned. He's dynamic, he's powerful, great at passing, great at tackling - you name it he can do it. People talk about who the best player in the world is... Is it Messi, Ronaldo or Kaka? They are just a few names we could mention and Stevie's right up there with them. I honestly don't think he realises just how good he is. I've got some great Stevie memories from my time at Anfield but one that sticks out in my mind that always makes me chuckle was when I asked him if he wanted a pair of boots. He used to clean mine when he was a trainee and when I asked him what size boot he was he turned to me with a cheeky grin and said: "six, seven, eight and nine." I'll never forget that. He wanted the other boots for his mates! Like I say, I was at Liverpool a good number of years too so I know how it feels to have played for them for over a decade. It's a special club and if you leave, no matter where you go, it's always going to be a step down. So, it's a great achievement for him to have been such a huge part of the club for those 10 years and I think he's got many more ahead of him. ![]() You need the likes of Gerrard and Carragher in the side because they are local lads who have a great affinity with the fans. They are your heart and soul. Stevie could walk into any side in the world but he has remained a loyal red and if you were dreaming up a Roy of the Rovers top five he could probably better it. Every few months he seems to be picking up a new accolade or breaking another record and, to be frank, I'm proud to say I played alongside him. I hope he goes on to achieve even more in the years ahead and continues to add to his medal collection in what has been a fantastic Liverpool career so far. Jamie Redknapp was speaking to Paul Hassall ![]()

STEVIE G: FLYING THE FLAG FOR ENGLAND
Paul Hassall 19 November 2008 In our latest article celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Steven Gerrard's first-team debut, we take a look at our skipper's England career.![]() The Wembley friendly against Ukraine on May 31, 2000 was a highly significant day for Steven Gerrard for two landmark reasons. Not only was he about to make his senior England bow, but he had also been selected for Kevin Keegan's Euro 2000 squad. It was a massive achievement for the birthday boy, who had just turned 20 the previous day, and all the more remarkable that he was featuring after just 18 months and 44 matches in the Liverpool first-team. His performance that night, backed by his growing importance to Gerard Houllier's men, meant that he would not only have the honour of travelling to Holland and Belgium with his country - he was also being tipped to be one of England's star men. However, as was often the case in the fledgling days of his career, injury would prevent him from playing a more pivotal role in the competition. He made just one fleeting appearance as an impressive substitute in England's solitary success of the tournament, a 1-0 win over clubmate Dietmar Hamann's Germany. It was a bitter disappointment for Stevie but it wasn't long before he was the key man for both club and country. A magnificent 2000/01 season at Anfield where he was a mainstay in Liverpool's cup treble success was followed by another meeting with Germany. This time it was a World Cup qualifier in Munich and Gerrard struck his first goal for England in the sensational 5-1 win. ![]() But despite emerging as a key figure under Sven Goran Eriksson, Gerrard's dreams of England glory would again be thwarted by injury, and he missed the 2002 World Cup when he was forced to pull out of the squad and have surgery on a problematic groin. It was another huge blow, particularly as he had become something of a lucky charm for England having yet to taste a defeat while on senior international duty. It was a record to be proud of but one that was inevitably going to come to an end sooner or later. On the night he captained his country for the first time on March 31, 2004, England lost 1-0 to Sweden and Stevie lost his unbeaten run in what was his 22nd game for the Three Lions. By the start of Euro 2004 he was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, but as the media began to speculate over his future at club level, Gerrard struggled to impose his usual game upon the proceedings. It was a different story at club level and he continued to reach new heights with Liverpool, following up his heroics in Istanbul with a virtuoso display in the 2006 FA Cup Final - later dubbed 'The Gerrard final.' On the back of such career-defining performances, the World Cup in Germany promised to be THE tournament when Gerrard would finally make his imprint upon the world stage. But once again England failed to deliver and despite goals against Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden, Gerrard saw his hopes of winning the World Cup end in a penalty shoot-out defeat against Portugal. Their exit prompted the departure of Sven Goran Eriksson as manager with Steve McClaren promoted to the role of head coach. One of the ex-Middlesbrough manager's first tasks was to appoint a new captain and after giving Chelsea's John Terry the honour of the armband, he named Gerrard as the vice captain. The ill-fated Euro 2008 campaign began in earnest in September 2007 with Stevie netting in a 5-0 win over Andorra at Old Trafford, before making a landmark 50th appearance for his country in a 1-0 win in Macedonia. ![]() However, not even an inspirational two goal blast away to Andorra could keep England on course and they eventually missed out on a place in Austria and Switzerland after suffering defeats against Russia and Croatia in their final two matches. Inevitably the failure meant the end of the road for McClaren and England turned to Fabio Capello ahead of the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. Stevie featured in the Italian's first match in charge at home to Switzerland and went on to score his first goal under the new regime in a 2-0 win over the USA in May 2008. In his last outing for his country he struck a superb long range effort to set them on their way to a 3-1 win away to Belarus, and with 70 caps to his name, he looks well on course to notch up a century of England appearances before he eventually bids farewell to the international scene. LIVERPOOL 0 - 0 FULHAM
Saturday 22 November 2008 15:00 , Barclays Premier League ![]() REDS FRUSTRATED BY FULHAM Liverpool remain level on points with Chelsea at the top of the Barclays Premier League despite being held to a goalless draw with Fulham at Anfield. The Reds dominated throughout a lively contest but missed the chance to move clear of Luiz Felipe Scolari ?s men after failing to find that elusive match winning goal. It was all the more frustrating for Rafa and co after the Londoners drew a blank at home to Newcastle United. The first chance of what proved to be hugely frustrating match for Liverpool fell to the hosts on four minutes when a magnificent 40 yard ball from Fabio Aurelio found the marauding Alvaro Arbeloa down the right. The Spaniard showed good awareness to cut the ball back for Dirk Kuyt on the edge of the box but for once the Dutchman couldn ?t finish and dragged his shot wide of the far post. It set the tone for the rest of the half with the home side wasting a series of good openings while Fulham threatened on the counter attack. Roy Hodgson ?s men had not won at Anfield in 27 previous visits prior to kick-off, and although that run has now stretched to 28 matches, they could have given themselves a fighting chance of a shock victory on 20 minutes when they carved Liverpool open. The Reds failed to clear a right-wing free-kick and after Jimmy Bullard and Clint Dempsey had combined to set up Andy Johnson, the former Everton man fired a gilt-edged opportunity straight at Pepe Reina. It was proving to be an entertaining encounter and although Fulham had their moments, the hosts should have gone in at the interval ahead. The chance of the half fell to Robbie Keane, who really should have done better after racing on to a flick from Lucas and smashing a shot straight at Mark Schwarzer from just eight yards out. The returning Fernando Torres ? who was making his first league start since the clash at Manchester City on October 5 ? then went close with two instinctive efforts before the Cottagers again showed how dangerous they could be on the break when Bullard forced a top drawer save from Reina after Zamora ?s rampaging run down the right had left the Liverpool defence exposed. The underlying feeling reverberating around Anfield at the halfway point was one of frustration and the home side set about putting that right with a fast start to the second period. Torres was beginning to have more and more influence on the play and created two good openings in the first five minutes of the half. First he saw a delightful effort curl just over the top after some good play by Keane, before a brilliant individual run saw him cut in from the left and sting the fingertips of Schwarzer with a sizzling strike. The Reds were turning the screw and the Fulham stopper had to be at his instinctive best again on 70 minutes when he pushed Dirk Kuyt ?s effort away after a volleyed cross from Albert Riera It looked like being one of those days for Rafa and co, and after Lucas and Daniel Agger both went close late on, it would prove to be the case, as Fulham held on to claim a surprise point. Teams Liverpool: Reina, Aurelio, Carragher (captain), Agger, Arbeloa, Riera, Mascherano, Leiva, Kuyt, Torres, Keane. Subs - Hyypia, El Zhar, Babel, Dossena, Cavalieri, Alonso, Benayoun Fulham: Schwarzer, Konchesky, Hughes, Hangeland, Pantsill, Dempsey, Bullard, Murphy (captain), Davies, Johnson, Zamora. Subs - Baird, Zuberbuhler, Gray, Gera, Stoor, Kallio, Nevland Referee: M Halsey Conditions: Cold Attendance: Unknown Liverpoolfc.tv Man-of-the-Match: Jamie Carragher

RAFA: WINNING WAS ALL-IMPORTANT
Joe Curran 27 November 2008 Rafael Benitez insisted that winning was all that mattered after the Reds booked their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with a narrow 1-0 win over Marseille at Anfield. The Reds boss admitted his side had not performed to their full potential, but after a nervy display against the French outfit, he was relieved to get the three points. "It was a difficult game, but at the end of the day we won and that is the main thing," said Benitez. "I think the game was a bit strange because we scored a goal and then they were attacking, and we could only play on the counter attack. "We played open against a team who have pace and ability - this is always a problem. "They needed to attack and had three strikers. They also had one or two players between the lines, so to control five players with pace and ability isn't always easy. "We knew before the game that they have good players and we were not controlling the game or keeping the ball - the game was too open and they had too much space. They were always a threat. "We were trying to play Torres in with the final pass too quickly sometimes, and that is something we have to analyse. But the main thing today was to win and qualify, so we are really pleased. "Clearly we need to improve our possession - we need to keep the ball better and were giving it away too easily." Steven Gerrard scored his fifth Champions League goal of the season to become joint-top scorer in the competition with Barcelona's Lionel Messi, and Benitez revealed he was happy with his skipper's match-winning contribution. "We know that Gerrard is an attacking midfielder with a very attacking mentality so he can score goals. He is very important player for us and his goal proved it."
